I’m Portuguese and was born in Lisbon, Portugal. In 2019, I accepted an offer. I relocated from Lisbon to London. How did I get the offer in the first place?
For the interview, I had to meet them at the headquarters in London. There was no remote work or interviews like there are now — not very common, at least. The interview was in the morning. On the interview day, I took the earliest aeroplane and was there on time — all expenses paid by me.
Round-trip — I bought tickets to get back home in the afternoon.
After the interview, they invited me for lunch. The line manager told me they had an afternoon full of meetings and that he and his line manager would decide later in the evening.
He asked if I could wait in the office. Really? I’ve been on a flight for 2 hours and 45 minutes and travelled 1,500 km. Do I need to wait? For what, exactly?
Of course I can’t wait. I already have the tickets to go back home.
Wrong answer.
Of course — I’ll find a way. I’ll be here waiting for you.
Better answer.
What happened? I lost the flight, so I had to find another flight back. I bought new tickets. This interview is getting very expensive, it has been a long day, and I’m tired.
They made me an offer and sent me a message asking for my expenses invoices so the company could pay in full.
I’ve accepted the offer.
Some humanity goes a long way. Find a way.
